In 1992 my friend John Nation, who was a staff photographer for Louisville Magazine, asked if I would be interested in shooting for the magazine during the week of the Kentucky Derby. I immediately agreed and thus my 18-year Derby adventure began.
Shooting for Louisville Magazine was about the activities surrounding Derby week, such as the Kentucky Derby Festival, parties, and just anything Derby, but most of all people, people and more people, the actual race was secondary. I religiously traveled to Louisville, KY for 18 years the last of April until the 1st Saturday in May from 1992 to 2010, (missing one year 2008 for health reasons.)
I shot film for the first 10 years from 1992 until 2001 and switched to digital in 2002 and have created galleries for each year of photographing the Kentucky Derby. As of now I have eight galleries 2002-2010, because I already have digitized images of those years. I will be adding 1992-2001 galleries as I scan the slides from those years.
Photographing the Kentucky Derby was quite an experience and I was fortunate to have that opportunity in my career. I made many lifelong friends and shot with some of the best photographers in the world at this world class event.
